Every roof must be equipped with security systems. Such roofing structures are divided into three conditional groups:

  • Devices used to ensure the safety of people on the roof. Such roofing systems are made in the form of various fences.
  • Equipment that prevents avalanches of snow masses accumulated within the roof. These are the so-called snow retainers. Today, a roof with a structure for retaining snow will no longer surprise anyone.
  • Devices for quickly evacuating people through the roof, for example during a fire. These are stairs and other structures.

Snow guards are one of the most common safety systems in Europe. Today they can increasingly be seen on the roofs of houses, public or industrial buildings in Russia.

Snow guards provide:

  • safety of people who pass below the building;
  • integrity of balconies (especially on upper floors);
  • safety of the roof and its elements;
  • integrity of drains.

Why should the roof be equipped with a snow retention system? Interesting fact: in Europe, insurance companies refuse to sell policies to owners of houses that do not have snow guards installed. And that says a lot.

The absence of a snow retention system on the roof can only be justified by the fact of a slight slope of the roof made of soft tiles with a rough surface. The roughness of the material is achieved through the use of mineral granules in the raw materials for its production.

In all other cases, snow guards soft roofrequired element. They do not spoil the design of the building, but often play the role of additional decor.

Snow guards for soft roofs: there can be 2 types:

  • tubular
  • in the form of corners (snow stops/snow catchers);

If there is little snowfall in your region, pay attention to spot snow retainers for the roof. These are triangular metal structures.

Tubular systems are a universal option. They are suitable for both metal and soft roofs. Coverage in this case does not matter. Such snow guards have universal supports.

Corners (snow catchers/snow stoppers) are installed exclusively during the installation of a soft roof, and tubular snow retainers are installed both during the installation of the roof covering and after installation of the roof.

The number of snow retention structures is determined by the following factors:

  • roof overhang length;
  • its angle of inclination;
  • roof slope length;
  • snowy area where you live.

Looking for suitable snow guards? Call and your roof will be completed the best system security at a competitive price!

The snow retention system for soft roofs helps organized collection, retention and distribution of solid precipitation on the surface of the coating. A set of devices ensures gradual melting of the snow mass, divides it into small parts and reduces the speed of fall.

Installation required

According to SNiP, on roofs made of piece materials with a slope of 5% or more, snow retention elements must be installed. The need for such structures is due to the following factors:

  • tilt angle ≥ 3°;
  • large roofs with a steep slope;
  • regional winter precipitation indicators;
  • frequent temperature changes;
  • lack of anti-icing system.

Snow barriers, even with small slopes, help to evenly distribute the accumulation of precipitation over the roof overhang.

Application of snow retention as additional protection allows you to get the following benefits:

  1. Prevent uncontrolled sliding of the snow mass.
  2. Avoid damage to drainage structures.
  3. Protect the roofing tiles from premature wear.
  4. Provide additional thermal insulation.
  5. Protect green spaces and architectural forms located near the building.

Snow guards are considered elements of the roof safety system. Installing devices helps protect the health of people and their property.

Types of snow guards

It is better to purchase snow catchers together with the roofing. In this case, you can choose the type and color of the products. Thanks to this approach, the details will fit into the architecture of the building and will not stand out among other elements.

By operational characteristics Based on their operating principle, snow guards are divided into several categories:

  • yokes, or snow stops;
  • tubular;
  • lattice.

The snow stopper is a triangular strip made of galvanized steel 1.5 mm thick. The lower elongated part is used to attach the product to the roof sheathing. The shape of the point element ensures rigidity of the structure, which affects the effectiveness of protection during snow load.

Snow yokes do not spoil the appearance of the coating. They hold securely and protect bitumen shingles from strong winds, and prevent individual parts of the shingles from falling off. Snow stops are recommended to be installed in moderate amounts of snow with a roof slope of no more than 6%. For heavy loads, tubular and lattice structures are used.

Tubular systems consist of a group of brackets through which they are installed in 2 rows metal profilesØ15-30 mm. The diameter of the elements and the distance between them depends on the calculation of the snow load, which is allowed by the project for installed roof. The height of the device is about 150 mm. At the bottom of the bracket there is a horizontal shelf with holes for attaching to the sheathing.

Tubular models belong to the category of snow cutters. The principle of operation is based on passing the snow cover through the group installed profiles. As a result, the sliding layer breaks up into several parts and comes off the coating in small portions. Such snow catchers are used on roofs with a slope of more than 5%.

Lattice structures are barrier type systems. The kit consists of vertical posts on which a metal mesh is installed instead of tubes.

The height of the segment is subject to the slope and is in the range of 7-20 cm. The length depends on the area of the object and is 0.5-1.5 m.

Advantages:

  1. High strength. Recommended for installation on complex structures.
  2. Versatility. Can be combined with any type of coating.
  3. Can serve as roof fencing.

Lattice systems are used on roofs with a slope of 15...55°. Compared to tubular models, such structures are designed for heavy loads. The devices reliably hold a layer of ice and snow even on objects with long slopes.

Scheme for installing snow guards on a soft roof

Snow catchers for roofs made of bitumen shingles do not require changes in the order of the sheathing, as should be done when working with metal tiles. According to building codes, the soft covering is laid on a solid base, which serves as the installation site for the brackets.

Sections are assembled along the cornice at a distance of 60-100 cm from the edge and above skylights. It is prohibited to attach brackets at the beginning of the overhang.

Installation of snow stoppers is carried out in checkerboard pattern with an interval of 50-70 cm. Quantity point devices depends on the area involved and the angle of the roof. With a slope of up to 40°, the number of snow retainers is determined at the rate of 4 units per 1 m². At a value above 40° - 6 pieces or more.

If the assembly is carried out during the construction of the roof, the fixtures are screwed to the sheathing. The installation site is covered next sheet material. When installing brackets on an existing roof, rubber seals are used to seal the joints.

Tubular and lattice models are usually installed in one line parallel to the lower edge of the overhang. In snowy regions of construction, it is recommended to assemble systems in 2 rows with a gap between the support brackets of 5.5 m. The first group is placed above the cornice part, the second is mounted 30-50 cm below the ridge element.

Because of large area contact, the assembly of lattice barriers is carried out on a reinforced sheathing. This requirement must be provided for before the construction of the rafter system begins. The base is strengthened using additional hardwood beams.

The strength and functionality of such models depends on correct calculation maximum loads that can withstand the supports of the device.

The installation pattern of tubular and lattice snow retainers is determined by the area and slope of the roof. The assembly order and number of sections are calculated using special tables. Assembly instructions are developed by the manufacturer and are attached to the product.

Many homeowners prefer soft roofing to other materials. And for a reason. Easy installation, durability, beauty and a wide selection of colors and shapes are just a few of the advantages of bituminous shingles.

This modern material, which can easily give your home a solid appearance. And if you wish, you can install the roof yourself - its construction is not too complicated.

Material characteristics

Bituminous shingles are very elastic, making them ideal for roofs with complex shapes. Often its use is the only way to achieve a good visual effect.

Important ! Minimum slope roof tiles must be at least 12°

The tiles have good decorative properties, so it fits easily into the exterior of the house. The shingle plates have small size- only 30-35 cm wide and 100 cm long, installation requires only nails and glue, so it is very easy to work with. The shape can be different, the most common types are:

  • Honeycombs.
  • Rectangular.
  • Semicircular.
  • Shingles.

Most often, bituminous shingles imitate classic coatings made of natural materials, For example, ceramic tiles or wooden shingles. And this is an extra plus for its decorative qualities.

In terms of cost, tiles are in the middle price category, therefore, for a fairly reasonable price, you can get a beautiful and durable roof.

Bituminous shingles are a multilayer material 3-5 cm thick. Its structure includes several layers:

  • Top layer - decorative mineral chips different colors. Protects sheets from the sun, does not crumble, does not fade.
  • A layer of modified bitumen. Gives tiles elasticity and serves as a waterproofing agent.
  • Fiberglass. Serves as reinforcement and gives tensile strength.
  • A layer of modified bitumen.
  • Bottom self-adhesive layer covered with film. In some types, sand may be used.

Important ! In cheap types of tiles, cellulose can be used instead of fiberglass.

Materials used for installing soft roofing

The following materials are used for installation:

  • Bituminous shingles.
  • End (pediment) strip, abutment strips.
  • Bitumen glue.
  • Special nails with galvanized coating.
  • Lining carpet for valleys.
  • Ordinary underlay carpet.
  • Ventilation outlets.
  • Ventilated ridge.
  • Snow guards.

Consumption of materials:

Glue is used in places where there are overlaps, as well as for sealing joints. Its average consumption for gluing joints is 100 g/m.p. For valley sizing - 400 g/m.p.

Nail consumption - 1 kg/10 sq.m. Consumption increases with increasing slope angle.

Ventilation outlets and snow retainers are calculated depending on the model.

Requirements for roofing

Like any other material, bitumen shingles have their own installation characteristics:

  • Optimal temperature for roofing works+5 С о — +25 С о. If the temperature is above +35 C o, work is not recommended.
  • In hot weather, you should not walk directly on the roof. For this, special manholes are used.
  • It is necessary to provide a ventilation device for the roof, otherwise condensation will form between the tiles and the insulation.
  • The roof angle must be more than 12 degrees.
  • If the roof slope is more than 30 degrees, there is no need to cover the entire plane of the roof with a lining layer. Still, many experts recommend doing this.

Roofing device

Soft roofing is not particularly complex. Typically, its device includes the following elements:

  • Vapor barrier.
  • Rafter system.
  • Insulation layer.
  • Waterproofing.
  • Counter beam for ventilation ducts.
  • Sparse lathing.
  • Solid base.
  • Underlay carpet.
  • Soft tiles.

The main components of a soft roof

In fact, these are all junction points. These include:
  • Cornices.
  • Pediments.
  • Endovy.
  • Fractures.
  • Adjunctions.
  • Skates.
  • Ribs.

All these nodes, and especially valleys and abutments, are places with an increased risk of leaks. Therefore, it is important to install them with special care.

What to pay attention to

  • The shingles on the ribs are installed from the bottom up.
  • Trimming of shingles when approaching the valley should be done on a backer.
  • The valley carpet is fixed with nails to the base at a distance of at least 300 mm to the valley axis.
  • The cornice strip is mounted on the underlay carpet.
  • All roofing elements are installed from bottom to top.
  • At the ridge, the shingles are laid in the direction of the prevailing winds.
  • Glue is used to seal joints and overlaps. The sizing width is 10 cm, the layer thickness is 1 mm.
  • The correct relative position of the roofing elements is important.
  • In places where seams are sealed, mastic is sprinkled with powder to protect from the sun.
  • At temperatures below +5 o C, the glue must be heated.

Lathing

The base for a soft roof must be solid. OSB, tongue and groove boards or plywood are best suited for these purposes.

Important ! When using sheet materials for sheathing, the pitch of the rafters must be a multiple of the sheet size.

When installing the sheathing, it is necessary to leave a small gap of 3-5 mm between the boards or sheets. Otherwise, the tree may become deformed as it expands. The sheathing is attached to the rafters with screws or nails. In this case, it is desirable that the pitch of the rafters does not exceed 1 meter, otherwise you will have to use thick materials for the sheathing, which will increase the cost of the roof.

Before starting installation, it is advisable to process everything wooden surfaces antiseptic - this will extend the life of the roof.

Lining layer

It is necessary to put a bedding layer on the sheathing. Usually this is a special lining carpet. The technology for laying it depends on the slope of the roof.

If the slope is less than 18°, the underlay is laid over the entire roof area with an overlap of strips of at least 15 cm. The underlay is nailed to the sheathing with galvanized nails, and glue is used to seal the overlaps. A special valley carpet is laid on valleys, ribs, as well as at junction points.

When greater slope- the backing is glued along the perimeter of the roof (the width of the strip is at least 40 cm), as well as on the ribs and valleys.

The cornice strip is attached before installing the lining layer.

Snow guards for roofing

To protect against avalanche-like falling snow, the roof structure must include protective elements. Bituminous shingles have a rough surface that traps snow. But for winters with heavy snowfalls, this will not be enough, so it is necessary to use snow retainers. Thanks to their use, the snow remains on the roof and melts evenly.

  • Tubular. Pipe barriers are installed along the perimeter of the roof. They are attached to the sheathing. The pipes themselves are arranged in two rows, parallel to the base.
  • Lattice snow guards. Instead of pipes, a grid is used. Otherwise they are similar to tubular ones.
  • Corner ones. Made from metal strip. They have the shape of a triangle. Usually mounted in three rows. Attaches directly to the roof. Glue is used to seal the seams.
  • Hooks. They have the shape of a hook and are placed on the roof in several rows. These snow stops have little ability to retain snow, so a large number of them are required.

Most often used for tiles corner snow guards- they are easy to install and are usually sufficient to hold back snow. It is advisable not to neglect their installation, as this can lead to unpleasant consequences.

Installation of a soft roof is rightfully considered one of the simplest roofing materials. But, despite the ease, it is important to adhere certain rules, use nails, adhesive and backing recommended by the manufacturer for installing shingles, and pay increased attention difficult places. In this case, the bitumen shingles will last a long time and reliably.

Video tutorial about installing a soft roof:

Installing a snow holder on a soft roof in our climate with abundant winter precipitation is not just a decorative element, but necessary protection for property and human health.

How to install snow holders on a roof made of soft materials different from other types of roofs? The answer is obvious:

  • Arrangement of a soft roof prerequisite assumes a small roof slope angle (about 15°). In other words, an avalanche-like descent of snow from the roof into in this case impossible.
  • A soft roof has a rough surface, unlike a metal one. In view of this, the chance of snow accidentally sliding off the roof is significantly reduced.

In view of the above, we can conclude that soft roofing requires the installation of less powerful retainers than other types of roofing.

Today, manufacturers offer the following types of snow guards:

  • lattice;
  • tubular;
  • lamellar (point).

Let's take a closer look at each of these types.

Lattice snow retainers. The structure consists of lattice sections that are attached to the roof using brackets.

Tubular snow guards in their own way appearance reminiscent of window curtain rods. In this case, on the crate or rafter system the roofs are secured with brackets through which they pass in two rows metal pipes. The smaller the step between pipe fastenings, the greater permissible load on the design.

Tubular snow guard

Plate snow retainers are most often installed on roofs made of metal (galvanized steel, European tiles, etc.). However, it is also rational to use them for soft roofing in regions characterized by abundant winter precipitation.

Point snow guards – suitable option For soft roof with a small snow load and a slight slope.

Installation procedure

Structures for retaining snow are attached at the stage of roof installation; sometimes they are mounted directly on the covering, placing the elements parallel to the eaves. Optimal size the pitch between the retainers varies between 35-50 cm. The method of fastening the elements entirely depends on the chosen type of retainer design.

So, for example, hooks, point and corner structures are placed in a checkerboard pattern, and tubular specimens are placed strictly in one line. Let's take a closer look at the installation algorithm for each type of delay.

Tubular structures can be purchased with fasteners included. They are mounted to the sheathing using ordinary screws. It is rational to place the clamps along the line of the supporting wall, the step between them varies within 0.6-1.1 m.

Important: holes for screws in roofing must be sealed with rubber strips, which are included in the design kit.

Snow stoppers or point stoppers are installed during installation roofing material. They are simply screwed to the base and the fastening points are covered with a sheet of roofing material.

If snow retainers are installed on a finished soft roof, it is rational to use rubber seals to avoid leaks at the fastening points.

Luxury or necessity

The absence of snow guards on the roof can lead to dire consequences:

  • threat to human life;
  • damage to property as a result of snow falling from the roof;
  • deformation or breakage of elements of the drainage system;
  • damage to the roof structure frame.

    Important: even if your roof has snow guards, if there is a lot of winter precipitation, it must be periodically manually cleared of snow and adhered ice.

Are snow retainers needed for soft roofs? Mandatory, as for any other pitched roof.

In spring, winter during a thaw, and even in frost, if the snow mass is large, spontaneous snow melting may begin. This is dangerous for people and animals walking along the facade, for wintering under the eaves garden equipment, parked cars, plants. There is a risk of damage to the roof frame and its covering, and gutters and pipes may be completely torn off by the descending mass.

Another question is that on a flat roof made of flexible tiles, these risks are somewhat less than on a smooth and steep metal profile.

note

Snow retainers for soft roofs have a lightweight design.

Let's talk about what they are and how snow retainers are installed on a soft roof.

Types of snow guards for soft roofs

Soft roofs made of bitumen shingles are allowed to be installed with a slope angle of no more than 15 degrees. The property of the material itself is roughness: most often the outer coating of the tiles is stone chips. The angle is small, the friction is noticeable. Therefore, the risk of an avalanche is less than for metal profile and ceramic roofs.

And the load on snow retainers for flexible tiles is also less. The design is simpler than that of similar equipment for other types of roofs. Accordingly, the price of snow retainers for soft roofs is low.

There is one more feature - it is placed on a solid base. The snow retention structure is attached to the same base. When installing systems for other roofs, sometimes it becomes necessary to make changes to the sheathing structure.

There are several types of snow guards. Suitable for us:

  • snow stops for soft roofs. This is a small corner of metal plate. Its small size makes it almost invisible when viewed from below, but such corners solve their task effectively. The material of manufacture is galvanized steel or other powder-coated metal. There are also plastic models;

  • another form of snow stopper is a leg. Unlike the corners, which are placed along the eaves, the “legs” are installed over the entire area of the slope;

  • universal type - tubular snow retainers. They are much more powerful, they are often used for cool metal roofs. On a soft roof, installation is justified if the slope is steep enough and the coating itself is smooth (there are models of bitumen shingles without basalt topping).

Calculation of snow retainers for soft roofs

With a slope slope of up to 40 degrees, the number of snow retainers for a soft roof is determined at the rate of four pieces per linear meter. Over 40 – six pieces. This applies to snow stops; tubular ones are calculated and installed differently.

Each manufacturer has instructions for installing snow guards on soft roofs and calculating them. For example, the popular Borge snow stops are placed along the eaves in two rows, staggered.

note

To determine required quantity snow retainers, you will need to multiply the length of the cornice in meters by four, then by two and by the number of slopes.

When installing “legs” along the entire slope, you will also have to multiply the length of the slope by four. This will give you the number of rows. In this case, the snow stops are also staggered.

Tubular ones are mounted along the cornice. The length of the structure is the length multiplied by the number of slopes. It should be divided by the length of the tubular snow guard of the selected model, you will get the required amount.

Method of installing snow guards on a soft roof

  • Installing snow stops on soft roofs is preferable during the installation of the coating. In this case, the corner is screwed with self-tapping screws to a continuous sheathing, and the attachment point is covered next tile tiles;

  • if this cannot be done in a timely manner, the snow retainer is placed on top of the coating using rubber seal. Fastening is carried out through the tile into the base, and the seal seals the fastening point to avoid leaks;
  • tubular structures are placed along the eaves in one line with a distance of 35-50 centimeters from the edge of the overhang. They are attached in the same way, with screws to the base. If through the coating, then use rubber gaskets. The pitch between fastening points is from 0.6 to 1.1 meters. Since the mass of tubular structures is significantly greater than that of small snow stops, it is recommended to install them along the line load-bearing wall, this will balance the load.

It is possible to carry out snow retention on a soft roof roof yourself, but you need to know many nuances. If you do not have time for this important matter, contact us at STM-Stroy.
