How to insulate plastic windows yourself for the winter. Insulating plastic windows for the winter. Adjusting a plastic window with your own hands. Insulation of window structures and glazed loggias

Perhaps, main reason installation of plastic windows is their ability to retain heat well in the room. However, according to various reasons(improper installation, long service life, etc.) this property may disappear. IN summer period This is not so scary, but with the onset of cold weather, poor thermal insulation can cause big trouble. In order to correct this situation, you can insulate plastic windows for the winter with your own hands.

The main causes of thermal insulation failure

Some people may find it strange that cracks and distortions appear in modern plastic windows. However, such a problem does exist and occurs quite often. There may be several reasons for this:

  • shrinkage of the house;
  • improper installation of windows;
  • loosening of the mechanism;
  • seal wear.
One of the reasons for the cold in the house is the old seal

Depending on the reason, it is necessary to carry out thermal insulation. It is advisable to start work on a dry day in the warm season. This will greatly simplify the process. However, problems can often be too serious to delay. In this case, it is better to carry out insulation immediately.

Identifying problem areas

Before you begin insulation, you need to find and identify all the places that need thermal insulation.. Special attention attention should be paid to the joints, as well as the junction of the walls and the frame. You should also check the slopes and window sill. To identify areas where cold air enters, you can use a regular lighter. It should be carried out on all possible places blowing out.

Damage to thermal insulation can cause condensation to form on the glass.

Condensation, frost or drafts may also indicate an area that requires insulation. Depending on the cause of the thermal insulation failure, you need to think about how to fix it.

Work progress

It is worth immediately noting that if you insulate plastic windows for the winter with your own hands, the warranty on them will automatically disappear.

If the owner nevertheless decides to carry out the work himself, it is necessary to find a place for a draft. Sometimes it happens that it occurs due to depressurization of double-glazed windows. Unfortunately, in this case, it will not be possible to carry out high-quality insulation on your own. In most other cases this is quite possible.

Insulation of slopes

If voids appear under the lining of the slope, this means that it needs to be repaired.. Finding them is quite simple: this is done by tapping on the surface. There is empty space where the sound would be louder.

Old insulation under the slope lining must be replaced

In this case it is necessary to remove facing material. There will be insulation underneath. In most cases, foam serves as insulation. If the problems are not too serious, it is enough to simply add material to the places where the voids form. When the insulation has already served its purpose, it must be replaced. The material can be very diverse: basalt wool, polystyrene foam, foam, etc.

After replacing the insulation, it is necessary to check the facing material. If the sheet has cracks or other serious damage, it must be replaced. It is better to use PVC or plastic panel. Such materials not only look good, but also provide excellent thermal insulation.

You can choose polystyrene foam as a slope insulator

Insulation of street slopes is carried out in the same way. However, if the apartment is located above the second floor, you need to contact professionals. It will not be possible to carry out the work without special equipment.

Replacing seals

In plastic windows, one of the fastest wearing parts is rubber compressor. After several years of use, it loses its properties and ceases to perform its functions. To increase the service life of seals, you can use a special silicone grease(this is done twice a year). However, if the material has already worn out, it must be replaced.

To replace it, you need to pry off the glazing bead that holds the glass unit. After this it must be removed. Now the rubber is easily pulled out of its groove.

Replacing the sealing tape will increase the thermal insulation of the window

Should be cut off new material(it’s better to leave a margin of 5-6 cm and cut it to the desired length after installation). Before assembly, you must ensure that the site is free of dirt. If necessary, the seal can be fixed with glue.

Setting the pressure

In modern plastic windows, the window sash pressure can be adjusted. This is done by rotating the eccentrics (located at the end of the sash). A 4 mm hex wrench is used for adjustment. There is a mark on the eccentric itself that helps determine the adjustment. If it is located on the street side, the pressure will be weaker.

Modern windows allow you to set summer and winter mode pressing the valves

Setting the position of the sash relative to the frame

There is another mechanism in the hinges of the sash, with which you can adjust the sash. Adjustment is carried out by tightening the screws.

Insulation materials

To carry out high-quality insulation, it may be necessary to use additional materials. Here are some of the most common insulation materials.

How to stick thermal insulation film

The most common type of energy-saving film is shrink film. It needs to be heated to stick. The technology for applying such material will be discussed below.

Energy-saving film significantly reduces heat loss in the room

Important! After gluing, it is extremely difficult to tear off the film. Therefore, before starting work, it is necessary to weigh the pros and cons.

Main mistakes during work

Many owners begin to carry out insulation work during the cold season. You shouldn't do this. And the reason is not only the inconvenience that such insulation will cause. Many formulations, the use of which may be required, require special temperature conditions. Therefore, take care of how to insulate plastic windows for the winter, better in spring or in summer. If this does not work, you need to choose a windless and dry day for work.

Quite often, owners are somewhat negligent in searching for places where drafts occur. Under no circumstances should you do this. Even the smallest cracks and gaps can cause loss large quantities heat. Therefore, all of them must be eliminated.

When working with polyurethane foam, it is necessary to strictly maintain the thickness of the layer.

As you can see, insulating any plastic windows for the winter with your own hands is not so difficult. However, before starting work, you need to seriously think about whether it is worth doing at all. Most often, the cause of drafts and high heat loss is poor-quality installation of windows. If this is the case, then you need to contact the installer, who should correct the defects.

We installed or moved into a house with existing plastic windows. We believe that the issue of reliable thermal insulation window openings we won’t have to return to our home again. Alas, this is not true.

The question of how to insulate a plastic window may become relevant again. Possibly after installation window designs It won't be long before you have to solve it.

Of course, companies that produce and install windows provide their own warranty period. We have the right, before its completion, to make claims to them and demand the promised thermal insulation properties of the window. But the warranty period also ends someday.

It also happens that residents of regions with winter temperature below minus 30 they want to improve the thermal insulation properties of installed plastic windows. This option is possible. And there are appropriate materials for this.

Selection of PVC windows, control over their installation

We resolve the issue of reliability and quality of the thermal insulation properties of window openings independently at the stage of making a decision on installing plastic windows.

If we ourselves do not have experience or skills in installing PVC windows, then we need to responsibly approach our options:

  • Which company should you trust to install plastic window structures?
  • Windows and fittings, which manufacturer we will install.
  • Type of profile, how many air chambers we will choose in it (three chambers is optimal, but more is possible).
  • What type of double glazing will we order (for better thermal insulation choose energy saving). We choose its width, the number of chambers, the seal, what the chambers between the glasses will be filled with, and what coating will be applied to them.

How to make this choice correctly? Contact specialists, get acquainted with the design of plastic windows and products different manufacturers, with proposals from window structure installers, with documentation for PVC windows.

It is useful to familiarize yourself with GOST standards for PVC windows and their installation:

  • GOST 26602.1-1999 Heat transfer.
  • GOST 26602.2-1999 Air and water permeability.
  • GOST 26602.3-1999 Sound insulation.
  • GOST 26602.4-1999 Light transmission.
  • GOST 26602.5-2001 Wind load resistance.
  • GOST 30673-1999 PVC profiles.
  • GOST 30674-1999 Blocks made of PVC profiles.
  • GOST 30971-2002 Assembly seams.
  • GOST 52749-2007-8922 PSUL.

Decide on the above questions. The next stage is to carefully monitor the installation process of plastic windows. What kind of people are we quality windows didn’t choose, the warmth and comfort in your home depends 90 percent on their professional installation.

The right technology and detailed instructions proper installation PVC windows are established by regulatory documents.

It wouldn’t hurt to familiarize yourself with them before monitoring the actions of window installers: these are:

  • main “installation” GOST 30971 – 2002 “Installation seams of junctions of window blocks to wall openings. General technical conditions".
  • SNiP 23 – 02 – 2003. “ Thermal protection buildings."

Important! We must insist that the contract with the company that installs PVC windows for us includes a requirement for their installation in accordance with the above GOST.

Before installation we check:

  1. How to prepare a window opening for the installation of a plastic window. Using a liquid level we check the vertical slope and horizontal level.
  2. What size gaps are left between the wall and the double-glazed window frame? The gaps should not be longer matchbox (no more than 5 cm), but not less than 15 mm. A gap of less than 15 mm will be problematic to fill evenly and reliably with foam insulation.

During installation we control:

  1. To ensure that the installation seams between the window and the wall are done with high quality, and along their entire perimeter, according to the principle “the inside is tighter than the outside,” in three layers of sealing:
  • from the street - climate protection;
  • inside - insulation;
  • on the housing side - vapor barrier protection.
  1. How window installers fill these gaps tightly and completely with polyurethane foam.
  1. Pay special attention to filling the gaps with high-quality polyurethane foam. This polyurethane foams, foams - specially designed for installing windows.
  1. Check how slopes and window sills are insulated correctly and reliably.

Helpful advice! Spend no money on installing external slopes. They will help the polyurethane foam retain its properties as insulation longer.

Insulation of window structures and glazed loggias

But even with correct observance technology for installing PVC windows, there is a need to insulate them to winter period. Or perhaps you moved into a new building where PVC window structures were installed en masse, with poor quality fitting.

Inspection and control of windows' readiness for winter

Before deciding how to insulate plastic windows with your own hands before the onset of cold weather, do we first inspect them?

First, you need to identify the very presence of air leakage through the plastic window structure. Identify in which node, in which place of the structure there is such a leak. You can determine this by the behavior of the lighter’s flame when you move it around the perimeter of the window or simply by using your hand.

Note! Before winter, do not forget to set the summer-winter adjustment mechanism to the maximum protection position.

Replacement of glazing beads and seals.

If an air passage is detected near the double-glazed window due to a problematic glazing bead (lining), with which the double-glazed window itself is secured, then we change it:

  • using a narrow spatula, pry and pull out the old glazing bead;
  • Using a rubber mallet, lightly tap to install the new bead.

Visual representation of replacing the lining

If necessary, we replace the seal itself, which has lost its elasticity, between the double-glazed window and the frame:

  1. Remove the glazing beads (start with the side trims).
  2. Remove the glass unit by first removing the linings.
  3. Remove the old seal strip.
  4. Cut a new seal strip equal to length old (preferably with a margin of 3 - 5 cm).
  5. Carefully, without compression or tension, lay a solid strip of the new seal, cut off the excess piece with scissors.
  6. Reinstall the glass unit, linings, beadings.

If you find air leaks at the frame, then there is a problem with the clamping elements. In this case, possible reasons:

  1. the sash is pressed weakly (using a hex wrench, which is used for assembling furniture, or a screwdriver with an appropriate attachment, pliers on the open sash in the hole on the side of the handle and hinges, press the sash more tightly to the base);
  2. The seals around the perimeter of the frame and sash are poorly fitted:
  • Remove the old seal;
  • Clear the place where it is placed from possible debris;
  • Place a single strip of new seal into the groove of the sash and frame (the length of the extension must exactly match the length of the groove);
  • We glue the new installed seal.

Note! Try to buy new seals from the manufacturers or installers of your windows. When cleaning the profile surfaces where you will lay the profile, use PVC cleaners.

Do not forget to take care of the installed seals, wipe with a sponge with warm soapy water, lubricate with glycerin or silicone oil.

When preparing your home for winter, the question arises: how to insulate metal-plastic windows additionally? How to improve the thermal insulation properties of the double-glazed window yourself? And most importantly, how to insulate plastic windows?

These issues can be easily resolved. We insulate PVC windows using heat-saving PVI -. During production, its surface is covered with a special metal coating.

This coating reflects infrared rays and effectively prevents heat loss from living rooms. Insulation of loggias (balconies) that are glazed window systems PVC can also be effectively solved with the help of such film “glass insulation”.

Film is an option on the way to warmth

A good choice, protection and insulation for plastic windows is heat-saving ceramic IR window film (for example, KorQu models of the PREMIUM IR 6070 and IR 6560 series).

And, in combination with heated floors in rooms and on loggias, such film insulation for plastic windows will create an even greater effect in winter, because such films will reflect the heat of heated floors towards its source, i.e. back to the rooms and glassed-in loggia.

This method of insulating PVC windows in living rooms and loggias are inexpensive. And the price, when heat losses are reduced by up to 60 percent, is no longer so important.

Installing such a film on double-glazed plastic windows is a simple process. It is simply glued onto the glass itself and smoothed out. For convenience, you can use a plastic wallpaper spatula.

How can you insulate plastic windows using heat-saving film:

  1. We prepare the windows (clean, wipe with a wet sponge).
  2. Prepare the film (after removing the protective layer, wet it).
  3. We wet the glass.
  4. We glue and level the film, using a plastic spatula, on the double-glazed window.
  5. We cut off the excess part of the film with a cutter.

Replacing the assembly seam, installing insulated slopes and window sills

Over time, you have to look for an answer to the question of how to insulate plastic windows from the outside. It’s bad if you didn’t install external slopes in time, which should protect from natural phenomena heat-insulating layer of polyurethane foam, they were not insulated.

Then the foam, like insulation, will serve its life faster, will begin to lag behind the wall, and the resulting drafts will transfer the “dew” point to the internal slopes.

If it is necessary to repair the foam thermal insulation layer and its climate protection, we perform the following actions:

  1. Removing from the gap between the window and the wall old foam(you can use a chisel).
  2. Spray the gap with water (so that the polyurethane foam will adhere better afterwards).
  3. We fill this gap with new foam.
  4. To protect the foam, seal the cracks with sealant (for example, Belinka acrylic sealant, polyurethane sealant Dymonic NT).
  5. We install external insulated slopes. Foamed polystyrene foam (foam plastic, 2 cm or more in size), mineral wool, EPS (extruded polystyrene foam) can be used as insulation. Some people use ready-made insulated PVC slope, having bought it in stores like Maxidom. It is plastic, dimensions 2200x300x10 (mm), filled with extruded polystyrene.
  6. We are inspecting the window sill. If necessary, we insulate the window sill.

How to insulate the window sill of PVC windows?

The window sill can be insulated with polystyrene foam (expanded polystyrene foam).

  1. Cut out the foam to the desired size.
  2. We grab it with polyurethane foam.
  3. We lay the window sill on top of the foam.

Important! Do not attach the window sill with self-tapping screws to a plastic window. Use pads to secure it.

Conclusion

In the video presented in this article you will find Additional information on this topic.

Many people have a question about how to insulate plastic windows for the winter. This problem must be approached with all seriousness. Plastic windows without high-quality insulation are a source of heat loss from the premises. The entire range of work on their insulation can be done independently or hired specialists.

Insulating plastic windows both in an apartment and in a private house can reduce the heat loss of the building several times. Many problems arise at the installation stage due to errors by craftsmen or incorrectly selected materials. Therefore, the installation of a plastic window should be trusted only to professionals who provide a guarantee for their work. But if after installation during operation any defects were noticed, they should be identified and corrected.

With high-quality insulation of plastic windows for the winter, it is possible to prevent drafts in the room. Also, in this way it is easy to increase the temperature in the house by several degrees without additional heating costs.

PVC or Euro windows can be insulated all year round, but it is best to do this in summer, late spring or early autumn. The optimal weather for carrying out the entire complex of work is dry and windless. This will allow you to achieve highest quality thermal insulation and will extend the service life of installed materials.

You also need to understand that you can fix only minor defects yourself, but serious problems It's best to leave it to a professional. For example, work on insulating slopes or ebbs, if the apartment is located above the 2nd floor, should be carried out by specialists. Doing this on your own is life-threatening. Also, if any defects are eliminated, a person automatically loses the warranty from the manufacturer of the plastic window and its installer. Therefore, before any work, it is better to find out whether they can be repaired for free, without involving third-party companies.

How to identify problem areas?

It is very easy to detect heat leaks. You can use a regular lighter. If there is a draft, the flame will change or simply go out. Also, heat leaks can be easily detected without additional equipment. It is enough to run your hand along the contour of the plastic window and in the area of the window sill to feel the movement of cold air. The most common problem areas are the following:

  • seal placed along the contour of the sash;
  • the area of the window block where the glazing bead is located;
  • area where window unit adjacent to walls, window sills, sills and other structures;
  • areas where any headset is installed;
  • a section of wall under a window sill, ebb or slope.

How to eliminate a leak in the seal of plastic windows?

How to insulate windows without the help of professionals? Sometimes it is enough to eliminate all heat leaks by creating a completely sealed structure. This can be done in the following ways:

  • you need to check the glazing bead. If it is the source of the problem, it is necessary to dismantle the unusable part and put a new one in its place. This is very easy to do with a spatula. Beading can be ordered from a window manufacturing company or purchased at any store that sells profiles;
  • If a defect is detected, it is necessary to replace the entire seal along the contour of the sash. To do this, you need to carefully remove the glazing bead, remove the linings and remove the glass unit. Only then will it be possible to remove the unsuitable seal. The new tape should be cut along the old part, adding 3-5 cm as a margin. The seal is placed in its original place, but during the installation process there is no need to pull it too tightly or press it. All excess should be removed and all structural parts should be installed in the reverse order;

  • If there is a problem with the adjustment screws near the plumb line, a screwdriver should be used. One of them is necessary to fix the position of the sash, and the other to determine the degree of pressure. To get rid of heat leakage, the first screw must be loosened as much as possible. The other clamp must be tightened clockwise until it stops. The correct adjustment of the screws should be checked with the same lighter;
  • if the problem is in the slopes, first they should be carefully inspected. If large cracks are identified, it is recommended to use tow or any other insulating material. They are placed in the gap, secured with alabaster. It is also recommended to knock on the surface of the slopes to identify possible voids that must be eliminated in the same way;
  • if the cold oozes from the window sill, you should carefully insulate the gap that forms near the wall. It can be covered up cement mortar or cover it with wallpaper.

What materials can be used to quickly insulate windows?

How can you insulate plastic windows without the help of specialists? It’s not that difficult to do, the main thing is to choose quality materials and carefully study the technology for performing the work. It is also recommended to watch several training videos, especially if you do not have relevant experience.

You can insulate plastic windows for the winter with your own hands using the following materials:

  • polyurethane foam. Helps eliminate gaps between the glass unit and the window opening. It only works effectively if it is protected from external influence using other insulating materials. Polyurethane foam quickly collapses when exposed to direct sun rays or wind;
  • mineral wool. Counts modern material, which has high thermal insulation properties. With its help you can insulate the window sill;
  • silicone sealant. Necessary for eliminating the smallest cracks that can be sources of cold air entering the room;

  • Styrofoam. Effective insulation for plastic windows, with which you can eliminate large gaps or prevent cold penetration through slopes;
  • heat-saving film. If the question arises, how to insulate double-glazed windows, with minimal investment, you need to use this particular material. This film is glued directly to the glass and helps retain up to 80% of the heat that is lost through window openings;
  • construction tape. Allows you to achieve better sealing after applying the sealant;
  • heat-insulating plasters or paints. They are applied to the surface of slopes as an insulating material.

Technology for performing window insulation work

When insulating plastic windows with your own hands, you must follow the following technology:

  1. Need to remove the old one polyurethane foam, which is recommended to be done around the entire perimeter of the window. To complete the work, it is recommended to use a stiff brush, spatula, or brush. Remaining foam can be removed with a vacuum cleaner.
  2. It is necessary to degrease the surface of the window sill and slopes with a special cleaner.
  3. All cracks must be filled with foam. After hardening, it is recommended to cover it with plaster or putty with additional application of protective paint.
  4. If cracks are eliminated using sealant, you should use a special mounting gun. Only after it has dried (after 5-7 minutes) should the treated areas be additionally insulated with construction tape.
  5. At the final stage, you should begin installing the thermal insulation film. Before performing all work, you need to thoroughly clean the window and stick double-sided tape around the perimeter. To separate the film, use a utility knife. Before gluing it, you need to determine the size of the window, taking into account the tape, and cut the required piece accordingly. To better fix the film to the surface, it is recommended to use a hairdryer.

How to insulate slopes?

How to insulate plastic windows so that they do not let in the cold from the street? When performing thermal insulation work, many people forget about slopes and window sills. Often they are the main source of heat loss.

To insulate them you need to follow the following technology:

  1. The surface of the slopes should be cleared of old plaster to get to the base - brick or concrete. If the coating is in good condition, this may not be necessary.
  2. Apply to the wall surface plaster mortar, in which it is desirable to embed the reinforcing mesh. This will increase the strength characteristics of the resulting coating.
  3. After the plaster has dried, you can begin installing the foam. An adhesive composition should be applied to the heat-insulating sheet, and then pressed against the surface of the slope. The seams between the polystyrene foam must be sealed with the same solution. The insulation is installed similarly on the horizontal part of the slope.
  4. You can cover the foam with putty, drywall or decorative plastic panels.

Such simple methods you can protect your home from heat loss.

Of course, first of all, you need to remember that the period of perfect operation can be extended if you carefully handle the windows and carry out the necessary maintenance.

Among other things, you need to remember that the rubber gasket around the perimeter of the window lasts much longer if it is periodically lubricated. Repairs should best be carried out early, when the need for it becomes clear.

When using certain insulating compositions, a strictly defined temperature regime. Also, it would not be superfluous to choose a dry and windless day for repairs.

You can do the work of filling gaps yourself. In case of carrying out external work independently, it is recommended to work only on the first two floors.

If your apartment is located higher, then you need to contact a specialist. It is also not recommended to act independently when adjusting windows or replacing their parts. Of course, with enough experience and appropriate skills, it is quite possible to handle it yourself, but a professional will do the job efficiently and with a guarantee.

Methods of carrying out work to improve thermal insulation

Let us immediately note that such works can be divided into two large groups:

  1. Related to the repair of plastic windows and closing existing cracks.
  2. Various additional measures.

The second section may include the following types of work:

  1. Wool blinds. If used, their stripes can be wrapped in woolen cloth. This will greatly help keep you warm.
  2. Heat-saving film. WITH inside a special film is attached using double-sided tape. We can talk about either a separate sash or an entire window. Then, over the entire surface, the film is heated with warm air from a hairdryer. The film tightly envelops the entire structure, providing high-quality thermal insulation.
  3. Using an electric heater. This is a small square box that is installed directly on the glass. Sometimes this is done during installation, and sometimes during operation. We are talking about using a special electrical appliance that is made specifically for this method of application.
  4. Use of curtains.

We must remember that if there are problems with heat conservation, then it may be necessary to insulate the joints of the window and walls or window sill. The plastic window itself does not need to be sealed. It needs to be adjusted and as a result it is able to completely restore its thermal insulating properties.

Where to begin?

Sealing seams is the easiest way to prevent blowing

If you feel that heat is leaking in, then first of all, you need to find out the reason. If we are talking about open cracks, then the easiest way is to check if there is air movement.

One common way to do this is to use a lighter. The deflection of the flame will show where the air movement is occurring. You can also move your hand to feel where the air is moving.

But the latter method has less sensitivity. Further actions depend on what kind of leakage occurs.

Let's look at the different possible options:

  1. The gap under the window sill. Sometimes, when insufficient attention is paid to its junction with the wall below. As a result, there may even be a through gap. In this case, it needs to be sealed. Another situation is possible here. The gap may not be visible from the outside. In this case, holes are drilled between the frame and the window sill through which the gap can be filled insulating material. Then, the joint along its entire length is covered with white opaque tape.
  2. The gap between the window and the slopes. In this situation, similar methods apply. But when repairing slopes, aesthetic requirements are much higher than in the previous case.
  3. Repair of external tides. If it is necessary to correct the situation on external ebb tides, then special “warm mixtures” are used for this purpose. They are a special primer. Water-repellent paint is also used for this purpose.
After foaming all seams, the foam is removed and protected using various materials

For the first two options, it is possible to use various placeholders:

  1. Polyurethane foam. It is easy to use, it hardens well, but is also sensitive to temperature changes. The latter feature can lead to destruction of the filling.
  2. Silicone sealant. It is relatively inexpensive and yet easy to use.
  3. Mineral wool. Has good thermal insulation properties.
  4. Use of polystyrene foam represents the cheapest, but also the least durable and durable solution to the problem.

In the above situations general order doing the job is quite similar:

  1. Clearing the place, where filling will be done, from debris and remnants of old polyurethane foam.
  2. We wash the surface and, if possible, degrease the working surface.
  3. We fill the detected gaps with the filler we have chosen.(spray foam, silicone sealant, mineral wool or polystyrene foam).
  4. If necessary, seal the holes(if available) with construction tape.

Additional adjustment and replacement of seals

The main reason for increased heat loss is wear of rubber seals

If no cracks were found, then it may make sense to adjust the windows. To do this you need to check the quality rubber gaskets. If this is necessary, then they need to be replaced.

In some cases, gaskets may have nothing to do with it. Plastic windows have special adjustment screws that allow fine adjustments.

They are present in the frame on all four sides. Air leakage may be due to the fact that there has been a slight shift relative to window frame. For this type of work, it is best to invite a professional.

Also, accidental damage cannot be ruled out, which creates the need to replace certain parts of their delicate mechanism. Only a professional can do this efficiently.

One of the most common reasons for the seal failure of plastic windows is the need to replace both seals. One of them is located at the very glass block. The other is on the frame.

The work is carried out in the following order:

  1. The window is removed from its hinges. The old seal is removed.
  2. The groove is wiped from dust and dirt and degrease.
  3. Then carefully insert the new seal with the desired edge, prepared in advance.
  4. Then perform similar operations for the seal, which is located on the window frame.
  5. Paste earlier removed window on the hinges.

It must be remembered that if you constantly take care of the seal, this will significantly extend its service life.

This is done as follows:

  1. They are cleaned of dust and dirt and washed carefully.
  2. Wipe dry.
  3. Lubricate with special silicone putty (it is sold in car dealerships).

These procedures protect the seals from drying out in hot weather and from becoming stiff in severe frosts.

Repair costs

Let's give approximate prices.

  1. Call a technician to inspect the windows, assessing the situation and drawing up an estimate - approximately 500 rubles for each window.
  2. Minimum possible cost of work- 2000 rubles.
  3. Adjusting the clamps- 400 rubles for each.
  4. Replacing the seal- 130 rubles per linear meter.
  5. Window hardware maintenance(disassembly, lubrication, etc.) - 800 rubles.

When carrying out the work yourself, the prices are as follows:

  1. The price for the seal is 50-55 rubles per linear meter.
  2. Silicone sealant 280 ml will cost 50-160 rubles, depending on the brand.
  3. Polyurethane foam 500 ml can cost about 150 rubles.
  4. costs 340-550 rubles square meter heat-saving film for plastic windows.

Insulation of plastic windows- quite a difficult matter. At independent work You can save a lot on your costs. But to do this you need to have a good understanding of how to do it. If you don’t want to waste your energy on this, then it’s worth investing in a specialist who will do the job efficiently and reliably.

Insulating windows for the winter is an unchanging ritual that is carried out by owners of wooden frames before the onset of cold weather, which allows you to increase the room temperature by 5-10 degrees and reduce heating losses. There are many ways to insulate windows for the winter, both using special seals and sealants, and using improvised means available back in the days of our great-grandmothers.

Principles of window insulation

The point of insulation is to create the most airtight internal air space between the frames. As you know, air is an excellent heat insulator, provided that it is enclosed in a confined space. This space is the distance between the outer and inner frame. It turns out that in order to insulate the windows, it is necessary to eliminate the cracks that allow cold air flows from the street to penetrate.

When insulating wooden frames, three methods are usually used: using rubber bands, sealing the gaps between the frames and gluing them with strips of paper, tape or fabric. Wherein outer frame It is not recommended to seal them with vapor-proof tape - this will lead to strong fogging and, in cold weather, to freezing. Internal frames, on the contrary, are best sealed to prevent moisture from penetrating into the space between the frames.

It is advisable to lay an adsorbent - silica gel - between the frames, Activated carbon, soda or salt. To prevent them from spoiling the appearance of the windows, they are placed in small bags of white paper. However, in a city apartment with normal humidity You can do without an adsorbent. If the humidity is high, it is better to donate appearance windows: moisture, condensing on the glass, flows onto the wooden frames, as a result of which the paint peels off and the frames begin to rot.

Before you start insulating the windows and frames, you need to wash and wipe dry, check for large cracks, as well as the tightness of the glass. Poorly secured glass not only allows cold air, but they also rattle in the wind. If necessary, the glass can be strengthened; how to do this is described below.

Glass repair and sealing

It happens that even insulated frames do not protect the apartment from drafts, and most often the problem lies in poorly secured glass. Previously, glass was placed in frames on window putty, which looked like dirty gray frozen plasticine. Over time, due to changes in temperature and humidity, the putty begins to dry out and crumble, and after a few years or decades there is none left at all. At the same time, the glass begins to rattle, and between them and the frame there are large gaps. Silicone sealant will help correct the situation.

Repair and insulation technology:

  1. Assess the condition of the glazing beads - the slats that hold the glass in the frame. If they are rotten, wobbly and crumble, it is better to immediately buy new ones in the required quantity.
  2. Carefully pry up the glazing beads and pull them out along with the nails. Take out the glass.
  3. Clean the frame from any remnants of old putty and excess paint in the area where the glass is installed.
  4. Remove any remaining putty from the glass using an alkaline solution, e.g. soda ash. It is not recommended to scrape the glass with a knife; this will leave scratches that cannot be removed.
  5. The frames are wiped dry and coated around the perimeter with transparent silicone sealant, after which the glass is installed.
  6. The glazing beads are nailed into place using window nails. This must be done very carefully, trying not to squeeze the glass, otherwise it will crack if the temperature changes.
  7. The remaining cracks are also coated with sealant, removing its excess damp cloth. Allow it to dry for 2-4 hours. After this, the windows are wiped using a window cleaner and the insulation of the frames begins.

Materials for insulating windows are sold in hardware stores; they are a narrow sealing tape with an adhesive layer of foam rubber or soft polymer. Sealing tapes made of polymer materials can be used for several years, while you can open windows and wash them without removing the tape. Foam insulation gets wet when exposed to water, so it is best to remove it annually.

How to glue sealing tape? This process is very simple: a seal is glued around the perimeter of the open window sash using an adhesive layer applied to it, after which the frames are carefully closed with latches. This is done with both external and internal frames; if there are large gaps, the windows can be additionally glued from the inside masking tape- It is also sold in hardware stores.

Insulation of windows with large gaps

If the frames are too old or severely warped, they may have huge gaps that cannot be sealed with sealing tape. In this case, you will have to caulk the cracks with cotton wool, foam rubber, rags or paper, or putty them with special mixtures. This is done like this:

Insulating windows using putties

More radical method, which makes it possible to efficiently insulate not only windows, but also cracks in window sills, is to use building mixtures. For this purpose, you can use adhesive-based putties, a solution of alabaster mixed with chalk in a 1:1 ratio, as well as window sealants.

The selected mixture is applied into the cracks using a metal spatula, leveled and left until completely dry. It should be remembered that removing such putties can lead to paint peeling, so this method must be used carefully. However, it is very effective for old frames that are soon to be replaced - it is often impossible to insulate them using sealing tape, and putties and alabaster mortar perfectly seal the space between the frames.

You can also use moisture-resistant sealants for exterior use, but choose white or colorless ones. The sealant is applied directly from the tube, covering all the cracks, as well as the joints of the glass and frame.

Cardinal method of window insulation

If you don't plan to ever open the window, you can use polyurethane foam. They fill the cracks with it, wait for it to expand and harden, after which the excess is cut off sharp knife. To avoid yellowing and destruction of the foam, it is coated with ordinary white enamel for exterior use.

In practice, this method is used extremely rarely, and polyurethane foam is usually used to insulate a window frame, filling the gaps between it and the walls. This operation is performed at the window installation stage, but if you think that heat loss occurs precisely for this reason, you can open the window sill, window slopes and low tides and foam the window frame.
