Mullite silica wool is an effective thermal insulation material that is used as a thermal insulation and thermal compensation material, as well as for the manufacture of boards, paper, various molded products, etc. It is made from aluminum and silicon oxides followed by the formation of fibers using the blowing method. It has the shape of a canvas rolled into a roll. To increase the application temperature, chromium oxides can be introduced. The fibers are resistant to oxidative and neutral environments. In a reducing environment, the thermal insulation properties are reduced. Kaolin wool is not wetted by liquid metals. When the temperature rises to 750-800°C, the material practically does not change and does not lose its properties.

Among thermal insulation materials, it occupies a well-deserved place. mineral wool, which is widely used in both mass and private construction. One of the insulation materials produced using mineral materials, is kaolin wool.

It is not as popular among builders as others mineral insulation. This is explained simply: in ordinary house construction, materials that can resist temperatures above 1000 degrees are simply not required. Such materials are used mainly in industries that use high-temperature processes.

Production and quality characteristics

For the production of insulation the following are used:

  • technical alumina containing 99% aluminum oxide;
  • pure quartz sand;
  • binder (it is used as following materials: fire clay, liquid glass, organosilicon binders, aluminous cement).

Ore-smelting furnaces are used to produce molten sand and alumina. The process occurs at a temperature of about 1750 degrees. Using an injection nozzle and steam supplied under a pressure of 0.7 - 0.8 MPa, the melt is inflated to form the final product. The density of the insulation can be from 80 to 130 kg/cubic meter. m.

Kaolin insulation is available in various types:

  • lump wool;
  • rolls;
  • slabs;
  • shells;
  • segments.

Kaolin insulation is often called mullite-silica fiber, which is reflected in the labeling of products made from it. Regular fiber is designated as MCRP, and fiber with the addition of chromium is designated as MCRP.

The addition of chromium creates a material with even greater temperature resistance.

Advantages of kaolin wool and its areas of application

Based on the given characteristics, it is clear that kaolin insulation is a heat-insulating material high efficiency, which is also used for temperature compensation purposes.

The main properties of mullite-silica fiber are as follows:

  • low density, which means low weight, allows the use of cotton wool in the most different conditions, including at altitude;
  • low thermal conductivity allows the use this material wherever it is necessary to ensure reliable thermal insulation of equipment or structures;
  • high temperature resistance;
  • low heat capacity;
  • high chemical resistance - the material is practically inert to water, acids, oils, alkalis and water vapor;

  • resistance to thermal shock;
  • elasticity - guarantees the tightest possible fit of the material to the insulated surfaces;
  • resistance to deformation and vibration allows the use of insulation where other materials may be subject to destruction or lose their properties;
  • excellent sound insulation;
  • fairly high electrical insulating properties, which hardly change when the temperature rises to 800 degrees.

All these properties of kaolin insulation allow it to be used for the following purposes:

  • sealing windows, doors, dampers;
  • refractory lining and its repair;
  • insulation of gas ducts, heat generators, chimneys;
  • creation of fire-retardant coatings;
  • filling cavities of refractory masonry;
  • construction of buildings, ships, boiler houses;
  • insulation of tanks in which liquefied gases are stored;
  • as stuffing thermal insulation layers kiln trolleys;
  • gas filtration high temperature in an aggressive environment;
  • in catalysis and reforming furnaces;
  • thermal insulation of gas turbines;
  • as insulation cable channels located in combustible walls and partitions of buildings.

As you can see, in certain areas the popularity of this insulation is very wide.
Not long ago, zirconium and yttrium oxide began to be used as raw materials for the production of cotton wool, which made it possible to obtain a material that can withstand operating temperature up to 2700 degrees. These are prototypes for now, but the potential for their use is very great.

Kaolin wool with a density of 128 kg/m3 and 96 kg/m3 is special cotton wool made from kaolin. Used in various industries as a thermal insulation material. Kaolin wool is produced on the basis of alumina and quartz sand. Kaolin wool is resistant to fire, it can withstand temperatures from 1100 to 1250 o C, water and steam, temperature changes, chemical exposure or exposure to liquid metals. Chemical composition:

Production of wool MCRR

The raw materials for the production of kaolin wool are oxides of chromium, silicon and aluminum. Their connection is carried out in special furnaces. The mass obtained during melting and blowing is converted into light, thin and plastic fiber, from which mats and products of other shapes are then made. According to their own operational characteristics the resulting product must meet the requirements of GOST 23619-79.
