Even with the advent of the agricultural era, most people before the beginning of the 20th century began and ended their days with the sun. Man is essentially a diurnal animal, and the retina of his eyes works best in daylight. Deprived of the sun, the retina gradually adapts to new conditions and becomes pathologically sensitive to even the most ordinary daylight.

This hypersensitivity to light, or photophobia, is a disorder in itself and at the same time a symptom of disorders occurring in other parts of the visual system.

The degree of photophobia can vary from the need to squint in direct sunlight to serious illnesses that force a person to constantly wear sunglasses. In almost all cases, photophobia is an acquired disorder and not a congenital disorder. It occurs because we spend too much time indoors.

If photophobia can be overcome, the eyes get rid of constant tension, and this, in turn, helps to return normal vision.

The technique proposed by Bates for getting rid of photophobia is called "solarization" And consists in the fact that you simply expose your eyes, closed with eyelids, to sunlight. In addition, the warmth and healing properties of the sun's rays have a beneficial effect on eye health and the ability to relax them.

Start, if you can, with half a minute of sunbathing. Once the time is up, cover your eyes with your palms until the afterimages fade, and repeat the cycle two or three times. During each subsequent session, gradually increase the duration of sunbathing, bringing it up to 20 minutes.

If photophobia is so severe that you feel discomfort from direct sunlight, look not at the sun, but at the brightest part of the sky. During the next lesson, turn a little closer to the sun - and continue to turn each time until you can “look” directly at the sun with your closed eyes without discomfort. If even the brightness of the sky is too much for you, start with artificial light, moving the lamp closer to you each time until you are ready to solarize outdoors.

Solarization sessions can be carried out 2-3 times a day if desired. When there is no sun, use artificial lighting. You can use a regular 150-watt household light bulb, or better yet, a 100-watt reflector lamp that has a more directional light. This reflector will also come in handy when doing other Bates exercises, so it’s worth purchasing one. Do not use fluorescent lamps when solarizing, even though they are called fluorescent lamps, and under no circumstances use infrared or ultraviolet lamps.

Sit so that the lamp is at eye level at a suitable distance for you, with each session move it a few centimeters closer until the brightness of the light reaches approximately the same as that of sunlight. If you want, you can place the lamp behind your back so that it shines on you, reflected in the mirror. However, this method is not recommended when solarizing in the sun, since reflected sunlight does not have the same properties as direct sunlight.

Regardless of where you solarize, as you perform the exercise, slowly turn your head from side to side so that the light is evenly distributed across the entire retina. It is better that the total turning angle is 90 degrees or a little more, and the turning time is 7-10 seconds. If you want, you can vary the movements: “draw” a circle, or an infinity sign, or a figure eight, or any other geometric figure with your nose. Regularly change the direction of movement to the opposite. During solarization, you should feel in a state of pleasant drowsiness, induced by the heat entering through the eyelids. Imagine how the sunlight penetrates deep into you and fills your entire body. But if you experience any discomfort during solarization, stop doing this exercise immediately.

Some works based on the Bates method mention a higher level technique involving exposure of the sun's rays directly to the retina. Don't worry, it's not exactly what you think. No one is suggesting that you look at the sun with your eyes open, as this can seriously damage your eyes, even leading to blindness.

However, a very short and careful direct look at the sun can be quite safe. The exercise is done with one eye, while the other is covered with the hand. Quickly turn your head so that the sun's ray slides across the retina (the turn should only take a couple of seconds), while blinking. Repeat the exercise for the other eye, and then palm until all afterimages disappear.

Solarization with open eyes can be useful primarily for those people who have sufficient experience with the Bates method. This will help them eliminate any remaining photophobia. But for beginners, this exercise is hardly any more useful than solarizing with your eyes closed (and it can also become a source of tension). Therefore, it is better to refrain from it, at least at first. In any case, this exercise should be performed only occasionally and with great care. I mentioned it only in order to more fully describe the capabilities of the Bates method.

TREATMENT WITH SUNLIGHT

Exercises to stimulate the eyes with healing sunlight existed in ancient India and China. Sunlight has a relaxing effect on the muscles around the eyes, stimulates the iris and nerves of the eyes, and increases blood circulation.

By regularly strengthening your retinal nerves through sunbathing, you will get rid of painful sensations in the eyes that occur in intense sunlight.

Sit or lie on your back so that the sun is shining in your face, but Never look directly at the sun. Achieve maximum physical and emotional relaxation.

Take a fan (thick and opaque) or a piece of cardboard. Hold it 10-15 cm in front of your face on the left side, so that half of your face is in shadow. Close your eyes. After finishing the exercise, rinse your face and eyes with cold water, and then perform palming for a duration twice as long as the time your eyes were saturated with sunlight.

Exercise to stimulate the eyes with sunlight (solarization) should be done as often as possible. On cloudy days, the sun can be replaced by the light of a 200-watt lamp located at a distance of one meter from the face.
